Join us on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Albion District Library, as Brian Mortimore, SPHR, (“That HR-guy at KDL”) will lead an interactive workshop with three topics of focus:
- Employee Handbook Rules and Policies that every library should consider. This session, while not all inclusive, will draw upon the real life scenarios participants face in the management of people, and will focus attention on several real life scenarios that crop up and how your employee handbook can serve as a guide and compass to creating the kind of organizational culture your library team members deserve.
- Library Staffing Best Practices that library leaders can adopt. Brian will highlight how the staffing pool at KDL has changed and adapted over time to ensure great customer service. Participants will be challenged to consider how these or similar practices might be adopted in their own library for the benefit of both staff and patrons and will be encouraged to work through these challenges together, with their colleagues, in order to return with valid solutions to their staffing challenges.
- A Leaders Work Session on managing performance, and when performance consistently lags, administering Progressive Discipline. Following a primer on relative employment laws and a philosophy of performance management, this session will provide participants with hands-on role play in small groups of 2 to 3 followed by larger group discussion following each real-life scenario that is presented.

A member of the Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM), Brian brings over 20 years’ experience as a Human Resource professional in healthcare, higher education, and the library industry. He holds degrees from Lake Superior State University and Michigan State University (MSU). He is certified nationally as a Senior Professional in Human Resource Management (SPHR), a Certified Labor Relations Professional (CLRP) through MSU’s School of Labor and Industrial Relations and is trained as an Examiner for the Michigan Quality Council. Brian has taught undergraduate human resource management classes and has presented professionally to various business and industry, the Michigan Library Association, and was published by the Public Library Association.
He is trained and registered with the International Management Research Group as a leadership development consultant. In addition to his on-site duties as Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development, Brian has formed a consulting service to support other libraries through his work at KDL. When not at work, which is rare, Brian is engaged in strategic planning with his wife as they shuffle their four children around town to various after-school activities.
Each person must register individually so we have accurate counts for catering and for nametags, etc.
